  • Ashley Shaffer, Member of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada

    Ashley Shaffer was appointed as a Member at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada in 2017 and currently holds this role. Most recently, Ms. Shaffer was the first Ontario regional lead for the Gender-Related Task Force. This was a quality initiative aimed at advancing equity in decision-making and applying a gendered lens to refugee claims. Ms. Shaffer was also a Coordinating Member on other projects that increased access to justice through improved operational efficiency, such as the transition to remote hearings.

    Prior to becoming an adjudicator, Ms. Shaffer practiced as a lawyer in both administrative law and civil litigation. She is a member of the Ontario bar and earned law degrees from both the University of Ottawa and the Universite de Montreal. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University and a Master of Science degree from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies.

    Outside of work, Ms. Shaffer is an active volunteer in the various communities to which she belongs. Notably, she is the Chair of a local community law society, a board member of her local resident’s association, a volunteer at the Canadian Council of Administrative Tribunals and a volunteer at her children’s school. Ms. Shaffer’s career focus is in increased access to justice at tribunals, including through the use of AI.

  • Inability to attend may result in a registration being transferred to a colleague of the same organization up to 7 days before the Event. The request must be made in writing.
  • Cancellation incurs processing fees as follows: $100 for cancellations 30 days or more before the event and 50% of the registration fee for cancellations 7 days or more before the event. No refund will be extended for cancellations made less than 7 days before the event.
