The Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada (FJA) plays a pivotal role in supporting the 1200 federally appointed judges in Canada, ensuring the judiciary operates with independence and efficiency. Integral to Canada’s commitment to international development, FJA, supported by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), extends its expertise through strategic initiatives that aim to improve lives and livelihoods in developing countries. With almost three decades of experience in international judicial development, FJA’s collaborations highlight its commitment to promoting justice and equality worldwide.
One such initiative is the Technical Assistance Partnership (TAP) program, through which Canada deploys experts to provide technical assistance, enhancing developing countries with Canadian judicial expertise. Aligned with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP) and aimed at strengthening bilateral relationships as well as engaging Canadians, TAP promotes Canada’s leadership around the world.
TAP has two components. One (the Technical Assistance Partnership Expert Deployment Mechanism) is the engagement of private sector experts working in a broad range of fields. The second, the Technical Assistance Partnership – Government of Canada (TAP-GoC), draws upon the expertise of the federal government sector. FJA was chosen to pilot the TAP-GoC program, the success of which led to ongoing delivery of international technical assistance under TAP through a five-year project funded by GAC (TAP-FJA).
Canada’s judicial system is highly regarded around the world for its independence, expertise, and high ethical standards. Through TAP-FJA, the Office of the Commissioner will collaborate with up to three countries per year for five years, delivering targeted and focused judicial expertise in areas of need identified by partner countries and confirmed through Canadian missions abroad.
In addition to providing technical assistance to developing countries, one of TAP’s goals is to publicize Canada’s international assistance work and enhance support from Canadians for Canada’s international assistance efforts. FJA has partnered with the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ) to share TAP’s achievements through social media, blogs, podcasts, and other forms of outreach.
