Summary

Drug toxicity is a leading cause of death in Canada and around the world. Over the course of three episodes, we will address three interrelated topics related to the toxic drug crisis. This second episode will focus on how safe supply can help to combat the toxic drug Crisis. From January to September of 2022, fentanyl was involved in more than 81% of opioid toxicity deaths. Safer supply has the potential to mitigate the increasingly unpredictable state of street drugs. Host Sarah Rowe addresses this question and more with guests, public health researcher and postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Gillian Kollaand, and addiction medicine physician, Dr. Sukhpreet Klaire.

Guests

Gillian Kolla is a public health researcher and postdoctoral fellow at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research, University of Victoria. She uses community-based research to explore how to make harm reduction, health and social services more accessible to people who use drugs. She is currently conducting comparative research on the implementation and scale-up of prescribed safer supply programs in two of the Canadian provinces hardest hit by the drug toxicity overdose crisis.

Sukhpreet Klaire is an Addiction Medicine specialist and the physician lead for outpatient Substance Use services at Providence Health Care, practicing primarily at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver BC. He serves as the Associate Program Director for the clinical Addiction Medicine fellowship program operated by the BC Centre on Substance Use. His clinical and research interests include novel pharmacological approaches for the treatment of opioid use disorder and evaluation of community-based harm reduction strategies.

Host

Sarah is a 3L student in the English Common Law program at the University of Ottawa from St. John’s, Newfoundland. At CIAJ she has worked on the Symposium on Indigenous Courts, the Annual Conferences, and on podcasts discussing topical justice issues. She is the Chair of CIAJ Student Committee. Sarah would like to use her legal education to expand her worldview and advance the rights of Indigenous peoples, migrants, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and other minority groups in Canada.
