Committed to promoting sound administration of justice since 1974, CIAJ prides itself on supporting the legal community at all levels. CIAJ would like to warmly thank its board members for sharing their skills and working to improve the justice system with heart and wisdom for the benefit of society as a whole. CIAJ’s actions and programs would not be possible without the dedication of these outstanding professionals.

You joined CIAJ’s Board in October 2023. What attracted you to this organization?

I have attended some of CIAJ’s programming in the past as both a tribunal member and as legal counsel to a tribunal, I found the programming to be immensely useful.

When I learned CIAJ was recruiting for board members, I decided to apply as it would be a privilege to work alongside the exceptional members of the Board as well as an opportunity to apply my skills and experience to make a positive contribution to the outstanding programming CIAJ offers.

What do you like most about your profession?

I enjoy the variety of issues that come up in the practice of law, the constant learning and problem solving, and the opportunity to assist others.

What social cause(s) are you passionate about?

Equity, diversity and inclusion; Access to justice; Mental health.

Who is the most inspiring person or personality in your career and why?

There have been so many! I am grateful for so many individuals who have taken the time to impart advice or provide me with guidance along the way.

What is the greatest challenge you have faced along the way?

Being a Muslim woman of color in many rooms,… and at many tables where my voice was not fully recognized or appreciated.

When you chose to study law, were you thinking of pursuing a career as a counsel?

Absolutely!  I have wanted to be a lawyer since the 7th grade!

What else would you have liked to do if you had not become a counsel?

I obtained a Bachelor of Education degree before law school; I taught part-time before and during law school.  If my legal career did not work out, I would have likely been a schoolteacher.

Do you have a hobby?

I enjoy spending time with my toddler twins, traveling, yoga, and reading.

Is there a message you would like to pass on to the next generation of counsel?

Law is exciting and ever-changing!!

Be prepared to work hard, be constantly learning, and be willing to adapt!

If you could talk to yourself when you were 20 years old what would you say?

Slow down!  You do not need to change the world in one day…
