Clerkships Across Canada

The Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ) is offering law students a new clerkship at the provincial, federal or administrative level. The clerkship will take place between May 1 and September 1 of the current year, over the course of one week or more depending on the availability of participating judges.

Throughout the clerkship, students will acquire working knowledge of the law. They may observe legal and administrative proceedings, research case law and doctrinal texts, draft legal memoranda, and learn about new areas of law. The clerkship may give students the ability to sit in on trials and see how a case is conducted from the perspective of the judge. Students will be able to hear a judge’s take on written and oral arguments, the state of the law, and learn how a judge addresses and solves legal issues.

The participating judges come from a wide range of legal fields across Canada. Given a student’s residence and interests, CIAJ will pair a participant with a judge from one of the following bodies: Courts of Appeals, Superior Courts, Federal Courts, Provincial Courts that have jurisdiction over civil matters, Provincial Courts that have jurisdiction over criminal matters, Municipal Courts.

The clerkship is open to students registered in an undergraduate law degree (J.D., LL.B., B.C.L. LL.L., etc.) from a Canadian faculty of law who have completed at least their first year of study by the time the clerkship begins. Students who will complete their degree in 2019 are eligible.
